Combating Discrimination in South Africa (Paperback)

Since 1994, the new democratic government in South Africa has passed a large number of Acts in service of societal transformation. The Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act 4 of 2000 has been described as the most important piece of legislation passed in this period, second only to the Constitution. In this book, the potential effectiveness of this Act in reaching its stated goal of achieving societal transformation in South Africa is considered from a socio-legal perspective. The book also identifies a number of weaknesses in the Act and proposes a range of amendments that would facilitate the use of the Act by complainants. Further avenues of socio-legal research are suggested that could be undertaken relating to the Act, specifically how the Act may be utilised to combat poverty in South Africa. The book would be of interest to academics and discrimination law practitioners.
