A MUST-HAVE WORK OF REFERENCE FOR COMPARATIVE AND ENVIRONMENTAL LAWYERS An appreciation by Elizabeth Robson Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers and Phillip Taylor MBE, Head of Chambers and Reviews Editor, “The Barrister” Environmental lawyers, or any lawyers for that matter, who find themselves involved in issues pertaining to energy or the environment, should find this book extremely useful. One of the latest titles in Intersentia’s ever expanding Energy & Law series ‘European Energy Law Report XI’ is basically a compendium of research undertaken by participants in the European Energy Law Seminar which has taken place on a regular basis in the Netherlands since 1989. As such, the book offers an opportunity for readers to access a convenient, current and lucid overview of – as the editors explain –the most important legal developments in European Union and national energy and climate law. Containing as it does, the work of twenty expert contributors from leading universities and European-based law firms, the depth as well as the breadth of research that this book puts forward is indeed impressive. The chapter on shale gas and the EU, for example, is of particular relevance to the UK as well as the US, where applications for exploratory licenses have been met with some degree of disquiet and public resistance, mainly in the form of anti-fracking demos. One of the book’s contributors, Ruven Fleming, discusses the European Commission’s approach since 2014 towards safe shale gas extraction and, also, its impact on certain national regimes. Divided into five parts, the book includes topics covering EU Energy and Climate Law: Policy and Jurisprudence… Energy and Climate Treaty Developments… Energy Infrastructure Developments… Offshore Electricity Systems and Network Investments… Heat Supply Legislation in the EU… and Security of Energy Supply and Safety. Here then, is an absorbing and information-rich comparative study of European energy law across a range of jurisdictions and, together with its detailed discussions and extensive footnoting, offers an invaluable source of references for further research by academics and practitioners alike, on this often complex and vexed topic.
