Our world is becoming more interconnected and mobile at the same time. Devices such as cell-phones and laptops are capable of receiving and displaying video, both live and pre-recorded. The energy-longevity of these devices is becoming more important. No user wants their battery to drain in minutes simply because they are using the video feature of their device. In addition to power constraints, network bandwidths can change during video transmission. How can these two problems be tackled? Looking at these two factors, this book introduces current methods in scaling the video stream as well as reducing the power used. One particular concept addressed is bit-depth scalable video coding which will eventually be needed for future displays. Network bandwidth for this must be handled in a scalable way.
