The Critical Review covered the controversial political and military events of the Seven Years' War and inspired over 100 attacks accusing it of Jacobite, Tory and treasonous sympathies. The journal was edited for its first seven years by Tobias Smollett and reflected the slashing, combative style and intellectual range of its editor.
